The Internet is filled with countless web sites on a wide range of topics. No matter what you can think of there is a web site for it. Every web site has to have a name associated with it. This is known as the domain name. A domain name is something like google.com, ebay.com, yahoo.com and many more. Domain names come with .com, .net, .org and many more. But what one do you want and how do you choose what domain is right for what you are doing?
CHOOSING YOUR EXTENSION
.COM, .NET, .ORG, .BIZ, .TV .WHAT IN THE WORLD…
When you decide that you are going to get a domain name for your web site you will want to choose which extension that your site will have. In general you will want to either choose a .com or a .net domain name extension. The reason for this is .com means commercial and .net means network.
The first one you will want to choose is .com. Why is that? Well simple everyone and their brother has associated .com with meaning the internet. When you watch television shows and listen to the radio all you will hear is .com this and .com that. So above all else you will want to try to get a .com domain name. If for some reason you can’t get a .com the next most popular is .net.
Okay, now that we have gotten that straight what are you going to choose to go in front of the .com that you are going to buy? Well that all determines what you are trying to do.
The first thing people do when choosing a domain name is to try to brand themselves, their business or their product. So for example your first choice would be your name. JohnDoe.com, jimsmith.com or whatever your name is. If you do decide to brand yourself the most common type of site that will go on this domain would be a WordPress blog. The reason for that is that you can write about yourself and what you are doing. And all you would have to do is tell people to check out my site Johndoe.com. Simple and easy. Name and .com
BRANDING YOUR BUSINESS
If you are running a business you will want to use your business name as the domain name. So if your business is Jacks Tire Shop you will want to see if you can get jackstireshop.com. But what if someone has jackstireshop.com. Well the first thing you will want to do is see if you can add your state to the domain. So instead of jackstieshop.com you would have jackstireshopinsc.com as your domain name.
Using states, cities and other geographical markers in your domain help to get you listed locally more quickly and will also aid in faster searches when someone is looking for your services in that particular area. If for some reason someone has your name with .com and with the state you may want to go and chose the .net domain extension. Another thing that you will want to consider if you can afford it is to purchase the .com, .net and .org versions of your domain name so that other people who would want that same name couldn’t get it and take your business away or do harm to your good name.
BRANDING YOUR PRODUCT
Another thing you will want to try to do is brand your product. Branding your product makes you a house hold name. So if you have developed the new and wonderful wonder widget you will want to get wonderwidget.com, wonderwidget.net, wonderwidget.org as fast as you can. With the .net and the .org domains you can use them to drive traffic to your site by writing articles and doing other things that will get them to rank higher in the search engines. Getting your keyword out on the Internet everywhere you can will only help get you visitors.
CHOOSING KEYWORD RICH DOMAINS
When you are looking for domain names you will want to choose domains that have your keyword you are trying to target. For example if you are trying to sell a product or service on writing for children you will want to have writing, children or both in your domain. The search engines love domains that have keywords in them, it just helps with the ranking process.
But be careful about using keywords in your domain. You don’t want to use keywords that have copyrighted content in them. You don’t want to use the name of a television show or well know product at least not without asking permission from the owner of that product first.
TRY NOT TO USE HYPHENS
When you are looking to get domains you will want to try to avoid using hyphens or other characters in the domains. Most people won’t remember that there is a hyphen in the name and instead of having jims-tire-shop.com they will type in jimstiteshop.com which will not direct to your web site.
DO NOT REPEAT TOO MANY LETTERS IN YOUR DOMAINS
When you choose your domain try not to have too many of the same letters in the domain. For example you will not want to have mikesyummytummygummies.com as a domain. One because it is stupid and second it has too many of the same letters close together.
KEEP YOUR SITE AS RELEVANT AS POSSIBLE
When you decide to get a domain I think you will want to choose a domain that is as close to what you are trying to sell or offer as possible. If you are going to sell jewelry you will want to have something with the name jewelry in it. You don’t want to have the name tires or cookies or something that has nothing to do with your name. The one thing that you don’t want to do is make people mad when they come to your site. They are looking for what they are looking for and if you don’t have it or even close to it then they will go away and you will not make any sales. So be relevant, clean and to the point. It will only help you in the long run.
